The Broadsword was the primary weapon of the Highland warrior for almost two hundred years and was feared all over Europe and the Americas. Maryland KDF’s new Scottish Martial Arts program focuses on the Scottish schools of broadsword fencing, specifically the teachings of Henry Angelo, Charles Roworth, Thomas Page, and George Sinclair. Our primary focus is on the tradition of the broadsword, whose teachings were recorded and practiced by both Highland warriors and soldiers all over Great Britain.
Students are introduced to the basic guards, strikes and footwork of the Broadsword in an introductory 8 week course. They will then continue their study of Scottish Martial Arts through 6 to 8 week modules that will concentrate on learning to fence with the Broadsword and Targe, Scottish Twa-Handit (Two Handed Claymore), Lochaber Ax, and the Highland Dirk.
Students should be able to perform the following:
Safety is paramount! Students should be able to conduct themselves in a manner that will not cause harm to their training partner or themselves.
Pay attention to all instructions provided by the Instructor
Physically swing a sword in a safe manner for the duration of class (1 hour)
Commit to each module. Classes are structured to build on the previous lesson’s material and missing several classes could cause a student to fall behind significantly. Individual absences will be accepted to due life reasons.
As per usual, any student that signs up for this class must have completed Maryland KdF's beginner longsword class (excluding former VAF students known to the instructor) and be a paying member of the club! Additionally, you must comply with all other COVID-19 precautions as outlined by the club (signing the waivers and achieving full vaccination).
Please read and sign our COVID-19 waiver here - COVID-19 Rules and Regulations. This only needs to be signed once.
